Rushmoor's new council contract offers major savings and improved services to residents

A new ten-year contract to provide Rushmoor Borough Council’s bin collection services, street cleaning, public toilet cleaning, grounds and parks maintenance, launched on Monday 31 July.
 
As well as saving £650,000 a year, the new contract offers a number of improved services to residents on top of existing services, including weekly collections of small household electrical items and a shift from fortnightly to weekly battery recycling collections.
 
Residents simply need to leave their small household electrical items and bagged-up batteries on either their rubbish or recycling bin lid on any week and they will be collected for recycling.
 
As the new bin teams will be now working on all bank holidays, except Christmas and New Year, collection days will no longer normally change, also making it easier for residents.

Hampshire Constabulary, along with other emergency services, face an unprecedented amount of calls into 999.
But how many people know when they should call 999 and, in particular, the police rather than other organisations?
Recent information shows that not everyone does, with calls ranging from enquiries about flea infestations to "no credit on my phone". In light of this we are calling on you to help us keep our lines free for your emergencies only.
The campaign will feature a range of examples of calls via our social media channels, all leading back to one, clear message: only call 999 during an emergency such as:
  • a danger to life
  • a crime is happening now (or has just happened)
  • having immediate concerns for safety
  • a dangerous incident on the motorway
  • seeing something suspicious that needs immediate attention.
Call 101 for any crimes that aren't currently in progress or haven't just happened.

Rushmoor Borough Council to consult on option to convert Southwood Golf Course into new natural open parkland

Rushmoor Borough Council is to launch a public consultation asking for views on the possibility of converting Southwood Golf Course into new natural open parkland.
 
Members of Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet gave the consultation on the proposals the go ahead at its meeting on Tuesday 25 July.
 
The consultation will be available online at www.rushmoor.gov.uk/southwoodsurvey on Monday 7 August and run through to Friday 22 September giving the public the chance to have their say on the proposals.

Chelsea Under 23 Host Big Names at Aldershot Town

Chelsea's Under 23 Development squad host Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur as some of the best young players in the country continue to grace the EBB Stadium during 2017-18.

The Blues begin their season at Aldershot Town on Friday 25 August with a game against Premier League 2 champions Everton, followed by the visit of Manchester United on Monday 18 September. The season ends with two big London derbies, against Arsenal on Friday 2 March and Tottenham Hotspur on Friday 13 April.

The full list of Chelsea Under 23 matches at the EBB Stadium in 2017-18 is:

Local people are being invited to pick up their cameras and get snapping for a chance to have their photo featured in the 2018 Aldershot calendar.
The calendar is a great way to celebrate all that the town has to offer and will be made up of 12 photos of Aldershot taken by local people.
Whether it is your favourite park, buildings, event, view or landmark in Aldershot, please send us your photos of the town throughout the seasons and be in with a chance of them being included in the calendar.
This is the eighth year we have organised the calendar, which will go on sale across Aldershot and Farnborough from November and will cost just £5.

Rushmoor Borough Council - household enquiry canvass 2017

Find out what you need to do to confirm your details on the electoral register.
Every year the Government asks us to check the details of everyone registered to vote in households across Aldershot and Farnborough. We do this between August and November.
We send a household enquiry letter to all households with the information we currently hold on the register for that property. Confirming your information is quick and simple. It will mean that you will continue to be registered and you won't lose your right to vote.

Army Families Federation (AFF) SFA Customer Satisfaction Survey

DIO has appointed a new supplier to carry out their regular SFA customer satisfaction survey.

In future, Opinion Research Service (ORS) will be carrying out these short phone surveys.
Until now, DIO has selected 200 UK SFA occupants to take part in the monthly survey. DIO has now increased this to 500 occupants who will be contacted. The overseas survey will also recommence in October 2017.
Your feedback helps shape the future delivery of Service Family Accommodation. If ORS contacts you, please take the opportunity to let them hear your views.

Hampshire Alert - cash machine advice

We are issuing crime prevention advice after we received several reports of suspicious incidents at cash machines in Farnborough and Fleet.

At 8.13pm on Sunday 23 July, we received a report that a device had been placed on a cash machine at the Co-operative store in Fernhill Road, Farnborough.

A customer entered the store to advise the cash machine had not returned his card. It is not clear if any money was taken.

Similar incidents were reported later that evening at the cash machines outside the Co-operative stores in Queens Road, Farnborough and Kings Road, Fleet.

We are currently treating the three incidents as linked. An investigation is underway.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind people of steps they can take to protect themselves when using cash machines.

People should:

• never write down or share your Personal Identification Number (PIN)
• cover the keypad with your hand when you type in your PIN number
• if you think the machine has been tampered with, don’t use it and tell the bank or store
• call your card issuer immediately if a cash machine takes your card
• put your card and cash away securely before leaving
• be wary of anyone trying to distract you

On the 21st July 2017 between the times of 15.30 to 18.00 a large group of young people were dispersed out of the area around Field Way and Deadbrook  Lane in North Town after grouping for a pre planned fight.

Some of the young people were taken home to their parents and others were given words of advice. We are planning on visiting other parents in the near furture.

NHS veterans’ mental health services now available for armed forces personnel approaching discharge

Armed forces personnel approaching discharge can now get treatment and support at NHS veterans’ mental health services across England and thereafter into their civilian life, whether this is months or years later. 

 

If you are experiencing mental health difficulties, these services can provide a range of treatment and support in close liaison with Defence Medical Services (DMS).  This includes recognising the early signs of mental health problems and providing access to early treatment and support, as well as therapeutic treatment for complex mental health difficulties and psychological trauma.  Patients are also provided with help, where appropriate, with employment, reduction in alcohol consumption, housing and social support.

BACKGROUND

1.               In overseas locations the MOD provides services (or access to services) that, so far as is reasonably practicable, conform in type, scope and standard to that required by legislation in England (but paying due regard to the equivalent legislation in the Devolved Administrations).

2.               The 2006 Childcare Act provided for 15 hours of childcare per week for 38 weeks of the year for 3 and 4 year olds free of charge.  In overseas locations the MOD currently delivers this entitlement through places at MOD-provided settings or through access to the MOD Overseas Nursery Allowance.

Salute for Armed Forces after funds awarded to support military communities

Hampshire County Council and its partners are working together to support military personnel, veterans and families during Armed Forces Week, after being awarded £433,000 by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund

Hampshire County Council and its partners are working together to support military personnel, veterans and families during Armed Forces Week, after being awarded £433,000 by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund. As a county, Hampshire has the second largest military community in England with around 20,000 serving personnel, and the second highest proportion of veterans with 60,000 living in the county.

If you're planning to drive to or through France via Paris, Lyon or Grenoble, beware, new rules mean you're likely to need to display a vehicle emissions sticker on your windscreen, while older cars could be banned altogether at certain times.

The three French cities have introduced the 'Crit'Air' scheme, which is designed to curb pollution and requires most vehicles driving within designated 'environmental zones' to display a window sticker (known as a vignette).
The stickers cost €4.80 (around £4.13), including postage to the UK. There are six categories of sticker, which are colour-coded according to how much vehicles pollute and range from the cleanest (Crit'Air 1), for electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles, to the most polluting (Crit'Air 6).

While the vignettes only cost a few pounds, if you're caught driving without one in an environmental zone you could be hit with a hefty on-the-spot fine of €68 (£59) for cars or €135 (about £116) for HGVs and buses.

Not all vehicles require a sticker – cars registered before 1997, motorbikes and scooters from before June 2000 and trucks and buses from before 2001 are all excluded from the scheme and can't be driven at all when the restrictions apply.

State Pension Age increase brought forward



Six million people in their early 40s will have to work a year longer, as a result of a change in the State Pension Age, the government has announced.

The rise in the pension age to 68 will now happen in 2039, rather than in 2046 as was originally proposed.
Those affected are currently between the ages of 39 and 47.

The announcement was made by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, David Gauke.
He said the government had decided to accept the recommendations of the Cridland report, which proposed the change.
Men and women will be affected equally, as the State Pension Age will have been equalised by then.

The change will affect those born between 6 April 1970 and 5 April 1978.

Hear Me Roar - a programme to support young women




A programme to support young women

The pressures young women face in 2017 are astronomical. Growing up in a world where the internet reigns supreme, where ‘social’ media is available 24/7, our timelines are bombarded by images of impossible beauty (all photo shopped of course!), where any young woman can become instantly famous and rich by performing sex acts on a reality TV show

 

A generation of young women has developed who have no sense of self, no belief, less than positive role models and no sense of hope. They often seek love and attention wherever they can in a desperate bid to feel something, anything, resembling what they think is love.

 

‘Hear me Roar’ seeks to support 11-16 year old females who are vulnerable, isolated, and/or at risk of child sexual exploitation. Over the course of 8-12 hours (depending on the needs of the group) and split over 3-4 sessions we offer girls the opportunity to openly and honestly discuss and address issues such as; body image, self-esteem, confidence, healthy relationships, keeping safe on and offline, sexual health, abusive relationships and how to access help and support.

 

We want to create a community of young, strong women who can take ownership of their lives, their bodies and foster caring support networks. It’s kind of girl power with bells on!

Thames Valley Police - The Armed Forces Referral Service

We have today (6/7) launched a service that provides support for members of the Armed Forces community to prevent re-offending.
The Armed Forces Referral Service aims to help reduce crime, rates of offending and re-offending by providing better access to support for veterans and their families that come into contact with the police.
Thames Valley Police is one of the first forces in the UK to launch a service that provides members of the Armed Forces’ community with opportunities to access practical support from SSAFA, the oldest national military charity, upon coming into contact with the police through either welfare or criminal incidents.

Rushmoor residents urged to make sure they are on the electoral register

Household Enquiry Forms will soon be landing on doormats across Rushmoor as residents are being asked to make sure their names are on the electoral register.
 
Rushmoor Borough Council’s elections team will begin their annual electoral canvass on Friday 21 July, during which residents will be asked to check the details of everyone currently registered to vote at their address. By law, the council needs to do this every year.
 
Confirming the information on the form is quick and simple and this can be done online or by phone using the security codes printed on the forms. 
 
Most residents won’t need to make any changes, but if the information on the form is wrong or they need to add someone new to the register, this can also be done online.
 
The first stage of the annual canvass will run until Tuesday 1 August, with a follow- up canvass taking place in early September when reminder forms will be hand- delivered.
 
The final stage of the canvass takes place between the end of September and the middle of October when members of the elections team will be making personal visits to those households who have not yet returned their forms.
 
Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Concessions and Community Support, Councillor Gareth Lyon, said: “I would encourage our residents to confirm or amend their details on the electoral register as soon as they can rather than to put it off until later, when they will perhaps forget about it. Registering is simple and only take a few minutes.
 
“We do deliver a couple of reminders but the sooner residents complete the forms, the better, as we save time and resources in chasing them up which saves money for council tax payers.”
 
Anyone failing to register to vote could face fines of up to £1,000.

Rushmoor Community Food Festival - Saturday 16th September 2017

Residents of Aldershot and Farnborough will be coming together in September for a celebration of food, music and sport in the first-ever Rushmoor Community Food Festival.
 
The festival takes place on Saturday, 16 September, between 11am and 4 pm, at two venues in Aldershot, Municipal Gardens and the West End Centre.
 
The aim of the festival is to unite residents from across the whole of Rushmoor, celebrate the diverse communities in the borough and to acknowledge the area’s military history.
 
The event is being run by a number of community groups with support from Rushmoor Borough Council, the West End Centre, Aldershot Garrison and Grainger plc. Members of the community are involved in every aspect of the festival so they can share their skills while gaining experience in running an event, raise awareness of their groups and work together with other groups and organisations.
 
Among the diverse groups involved will be the Greater Rushmoor Nepali Community, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, Aldershot Baptist Church, the Buddhist Community Centre, the Shiva Cultural Centre, Holy Trinity Church and members of the West Indian, Romanian and Fijian communities

AFF secures better access to student loans

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is celebrating a change to Student Finance England's loan qualifying criteria, which will allow more Army families to access a loan when undertaking a UK based course.

As of 1 August 2017, families posted overseas who wish to undertake a qualifying UK based university or college course can now access a loan via Student Finance England even if they are not in the UK on the first day of their chosen course. This applies to both full and part time courses.
